With N2m, ‘wonder baby’ will live a normal life

IT is a wonder that he is still alive and that is what gives his
parents Abubakar, a cattle labourer and Hadiza, a cleaner,
the hope that with the proposed corrective surgery, baby
Abdulahi Abubakar would fulfill destiny.

It would be extremely hard for anyone with normal flow of
blood through his or her veins not to shed tears at the sight
of the baby referred to “wonder baby” now receiving
treatment at the University Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, Abuja.  He
was delivered on June 1, 2013 in a small hut in one of the nomadic Fulani
settlements along Airport road with a rear congenital defect known as
Imperforated Anus (without anus).

Hadiza first noted her son’s protruding stomach after three days
of delivery because he wasn’t passing stool like any other normal baby.
His parents took him to National Hospital, which was the beginning of
their nightmare. At the hospital, colostomy was done to save the baby.
This means rather than using the anus, the large and small intestines
discharged waste products through an opening on his belly. But when the
health institution demanded a deposit of some huge amount of money,
the child was taken back home from there, as Hadiza and her husband
could not afford the money.

Baby Abdulahi was left at home until he developed pneumonia and the
colostomy was also infected, it was at this point that the mother
brought the baby to the notice an NGO that immediately swept into
action and took the baby to University of Abuja Teaching Hospital,
Gwagwalada.

According to the Paediatric Surgeon, Dr. Samson Olori, who is handling
Abdulahi’s case, the baby needs to undergo three major corrective
surgeries and post-surgery care, which will cost nothing less than N2
million which neither the parents of this poor child nor the NGO could
afford. Baby Abdulahi has been hospitalised and awaiting surgery at the
moment.

The NGO has been seeing to the upkeep of the child and they are
appealing to good spirited Nigerians and corporate organisations for help
in order for this wonder baby to be able to live a normal life.
All donations are to be made to DEPENDABLE BASIC CONCEPT, GTB with
