AMAA 2014 to immortaise Mandela, Sembene Ousmane and Efere Ozako

Organisers of the 2014 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) have adjusted the award categories, adding a new award which is named after the late South African president, Nelson Mandela.

The new award, which is tagged ‘Madiba Africa Vision Awards’ according to Film critic June Givanni, will be received any film that captures the vision of the award category.

“The new decision is taken by the jury towards delivering a better 10th edition of AMMA,” Givanni said.

To also celebrate some African men who have contributed in one way or the other to the growth and development of the film industry, AMMA renamed two of its awards category to immortalise Sembene Ousmane and Efere Ozako.

‘The Best Film in African Language’ will now be ‘Sembene Ousmane Awards for Best Film in African Language’ while the ‘Best Short Film Award category’ will now be called ‘Efere Ozako Award for Best Short Film’.

A new category ‘Best Director First Feature Film’ has also been introduced to encourage young and upcoming film directors to continue to strive for excellence and best practices.

The category of ‘Best Film by African Living Abroad’ has been removed from the categories.

Sembene Ousmane is a Senegalese film director, producer and writer who drew his experiences and inspiration from French writers. The Los Angeles Times considered him one of the greatest authors of Africa and he has often been called the “father of African film”. He died in 2007 at the age of 87.

Efere Ozako is a popular Nigerian entertainment lawyer, known for his ‘Wetin Lawyers Dey Do’ slogan.He died on the 18th of April, 2013 of cardiac arrest after returning from South Africa.
