NABBED: Civil servant arraigned for selling fake land


A civil servant, Attah Okonu, was arraigned in a Senior Magistrates’ Court today, in Wuse Zone 6, Abuja by the police for allegedly selling  fake land to a businessman.

Okonu, 44, who resides at 19, Paraku Crescent, Wuse Zone 2, was charged with forgery, cheating and criminal conspiracy.

The prosecutor, Jibril Usman, told the court that a Nigerian, Nduka Agada, who is based in the UK, reported the matter at the Wuse Zone 2 police station on August 28, 2013.

According to reports:

Usman said the accused and two others, now at large, conspired sometime in 2009 and sold a fake land to the complainant. He said the land, situated at Mabushi, Abuja, was sold for N5.7 million.

The prosecutor said that when the complainant went to check the land papers at the Abuja Geographic Information System, he discovered that the documents were forged.

He said when the complainant asked for a refund of his money, the accused refused to give him. .

Usman said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 97, 323 and 364 of the Penal Code. After the charges were read to him, the accused pleaded not guilty.

The Senior Magistrate, Emmanuel Iyana, ordered the accused counsel, David Adegbe, to write a formal application for bail.

Iyana failed to remand the accused in custody, and ordered his counsel to produce him on January 30, when the court will hear the bail application.
