Lagos waste service providers promise better services in 2014

Olabode Coker, the Chairman, Association of Waste Managers (AWAM) in Lagos State, has promised that the organisation will improve on its performance for better impact in 2014.

Coker said in Lagos on Wednesday that one of the greatest achievements of the association was its ability to ensure prompt evacuation of waste in the metropolis.

“One of the greatest achievements for this year is that we now have prompt service delivery more than what it used to be, and that is very great. The issue of private sector participants going from one house to another to pack refuse is now the norm and Lagos residents are
satisfied,” he said.

“We also thank the populace who have been so co-operative to make sure that Lagos State is clean.”

Coker, however, noted that most people had yet to key into the norm of putting their refuse in containers.

He decried the practice of dumping refuse on road medians, stressing
that it could cause a hazard on the roads.

“People who dump their refuse are those who do not want to pay waste bills and this is not a very good development in a mega city. We will continue to appeal to residents for prompt payment of their
bills to enjoy more efficient services and for waste managers to maintain the trucks used for the services.”

He said that waste managers would have better identification and equipment in the coming year.

According to Coker, the identification is to ensure that the association’s workers are safe when they are on duty in residential areas.

He added that the workers would wear hand gloves, nose masks, boots and caps or hats for health reasons and professionalism.

The chairman also said that the. association would train its managers
and improve the welfare package of members of staff to ensure efficiency.

“This time around, we are going to train our supervisors so that their approach to business will begin to have meaning to people.”

He urged Lagos residents to cooperate with the association and urged
them to send any complaints to the Lagos Waste Management Authority
